Changes in typical purchaser expectations have led to older homes experiencing functional obsolescence as a result of layout and functionality. Understanding building techniques and styles can assist appraisers and agents establishing when a house was actually built instead of relying on tax records, etc. We will discuss why these things are important to the appraiser, agent, sell and buyer. Students will discuss style, form, structure, and neighborhoods of the American House. Time periods will then be discussed and the key architectural features of each period. We'll also discuss how to look at a house and identify changes and improvements over time, which may mask its original style.
